چکیده

A numerical model of nitrogen uptake and growth was developed for the temperate seagrass Zostera marina L. Goals were to evaluate the relative effects of light and nitrogen availability on nitrogen uptake and partitioning between leaf and root tissue. and to estimate nitrogen concentrations in the sedmen t and water column required to saturate growth. Steady-state predichons are quite robust with respect to a range of parameter values justified by available data The calculations indicated that roots are probably more important in overall nitrogen acquisition in most light and nitrogen environments encountered in situ, but may contribute less than 50 '/o of the total uptake in low light. The model also predcted amnlonium to be a much more important source of nitrogen than nitrate Nitrogen concentrahons required to saturate growth (even for nitrate) were estimated to be at least 50 % below concentrations commonly reported in situ, an indicat~on that nitrogen limitation of 2. marina is probably very rare in nature.

Eelgrass Zostera marina loss in temperate estuaries: relationship to land-derived nitrogen loads and effect of light limitation imposed by algae

In this paper, we explicitly link changes in community structure of estuarine primary producers to measured nitrogen loading rates from watersheds to estuaries, and quantify the relationship between nitrogen load, annual dynamics of algal growth and Zostera marina L. productivity, and overall eelgrass decline at the watershed-estuarine scale in estuaries of Waquoit Bay, Massachusetts, USA. Subs...

Seasonal variations in eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) responses to nutrient enrichment and reduced light availability in experimental ecosystems

The single and interactive effects of altered water column nutrient concentrations and light availability on the growth of the seagrass Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) and its attached epiphytes were investigated in 110 liter microcosms. Experiments lasting 4 to 6 weeks were conducted seasonally during spring, summer and fall in a greenhouse equipped with flow-through seawater from the adjacent Yo...

Long Term Decline of Zostera Marina in Long Island

A long-term decline of Zostera marina has occurred throughout the western and central portions of Long Island Sound. Currently, Eelgrass is predominant in Fishers Island Sound and the nearshore zone from New London to East Lyme. Eelgrass is present in the mouth of the Connecticut River but the population size and distribution are not known. The only extant population located west of this river ...

Nitrogen Fixation (Acetylene Reduction) by Rhizosphere Sediments of the Eelgrass Zostera marina

Nitrogen fixation (acetylene reduction) was consistently and immediately detectable in rhizosphere sediments of the eelgrass Zostera marina L. collected from several stations and at various times of the year Nitrogenase activity was detected down to 12 cm with the major fraction occurring in the 0 to 6 cm segment. Nitrate and NH,+ (100 to 200 &M) inhibited nitrogenase activity, while glucose (1...

Nitrogen fixation in restored eelgrass meadows

Biological nitrogen (N2) fixation is the primary input of new nitrogen (N) to marine systems, and is important in meeting the N demands of primary producers. In this study, we determined whether restoration of the eelgrass Zostera marina L. in a shallow coastal bay facilitated increasing rates of N2 fixation as the meadows aged. Rates of N2 fixation were measured in a system that had been devoi...
